What materials are dental crowns made from?

Dental crowns are typically made out of metal or porcelain, and they cover the tooth to protect it.

Typically when a tooth has fractures or decay that extend more than a third of the tooth, or they’re affecting one of the major chewing cusps, something over the tooth to protect it would keep the tooth healthy.

A dental crown is typically seen like a helmet over the tooth to ensure that the biting does not break the tooth or the decay is completely removed in a sealed environment to ensure that it is cleansable and maintainable over time.

Sometimes a dental crown can be done to increase the height of the tooth for the bite or can also be done to improve aesthetics and color

How is a dental crown procedure performed?

The procedure of getting a dental crown involves getting local anesthetics so you’re not uncomfortable. The second part would be removing any part of the tooth that’s not healthy, such as decay, cracks, oral fillings, and sometimes the part of the tooth structure needs to be rebuilt before the crumb.

We would call that a build up, which is typically made from a composite white filling material. During that time, the dentist will shake your tooth to make sure there’s enough clearance or room for the crumb or the porcelain to go over the tooth. An impression from either a digital scan or some of the gooey material that creates a mold of what that looks like.

Before you leave you will have a temporary, typically made out of a plastic crown that will cover your tooth to prevent shifting and sensitivity in the two to three-week time it takes the lab to perfect your perfect crown.

What are the advantages of dental crowns compared to other treatments?

The great news is at Three Sixty Dentistry we do our best to make sure inject dental crowns have advantages because they can keep the tooth strong and avoid dental crowns that can be used to fix broken or chipped teeth.

The idea is that if we can control sleep apnea, snoring, grinding, and align the teeth properly, we should avoid teeth breaking. Sometimes Botox for clenching or physical therapy, acupuncture, deep tissue massage, or stress management techniques can avoid the chipping.

How does Three Sixty Dentistry ensure dental crowns look natural?

At Three Sixty Dentistry our goal is to make your dental crowns look natural and not noticeable. By making sure that we’re using our lab to pick out the color.

Sending photos to the lab and also making sure that you’re happy with it before I glue it in are ways that we can reduce the risk of having crowns that don’t look natural.

And also too to make sure you’re completely satisfied and feel that you can smile your butt biggest and not have anyone notice it.

What materials are used for dental crowns at Three Sixty Dentistry?

At Three Sixty Dentistry, the dental crowns are typically made from porcelain. In the back where you need more strength and less aesthetics, we use a porcelain called Zirconia. More towards the front, when you want more aesthetics and light to transfer through to make the tooth look pretty, we can use a dental crown material called Emax.

Emax is a lithium disilicate that allows us to get strength and beauty. With both of these types of materials, we can actually use hand layering from the lab, which is a way to add a more aesthetic porcelain to the outside tooth structure. In the non-prep or very conservative preps, we can use a technique called photocopying porcelain where the lab will use powder and stain techniques to create porcelain that’s super thin, sometimes as thin as three millimeters, which would be comparable to the thickness of your fingernail.

These materials are all dependent on how strong your bite is, how aesthetic the result needs to be, and in what location of your mouth. At Three Sixty Dentistry, Dr. Brian Edwards, Dr. Stephanie Paletta, and Dr. Amanda Jenny are great at determining the right fit for you.

How long do dental crowns typically last?

It’s hard to say how long dental crowns typically last. Our goal is that the crown will last as long as possible. What that means is we use the best materials and techniques for you, and we also try to make sure that before the crown is glued in that the margins are perfectly sealed to avoid any kind of cavity or sensitivity that could develop in the future.

Dental insurance companies typically say that every five years they will recover the same crown. At Three Sixty Dentistry, our goal is that the kernel lasts much longer than that. We also have to make sure that your bite is not too hard on it, causing it to crack.

We also have to make sure that your gums are healthy around it, that you’re not having gum disease or food getting stuck and we also have to look at things such as dry mouth or things that could create cavities
