What are dentures?

Dentures are considered a removable tooth replacement. The pink color of gums is made out of acrylic which makes up the majority of the appliance, and there are white plastic teeth that resemble a natural tooth which are attached to the pink acrylic.

Dentures can replace one tooth or even a full mouth of teeth. Dentures often take multiple appointments and are made outside of the dental office at a lab.

Depending on the patient, the amount of time it takes for someone to adapt to wearing dentures can vary. There are some patients who get used to it very easily, but most patients struggle with a denture because it moves and they feel the amount of material in their mouth.

This is typically why a patient would consider a dental implant instead of dentures because they stay in place, cannot be removed, and have less bulky material.

Are there any dietary restrictions with dentures?

If dentures are worn without the support of dental implants, there can be dietary restrictions with dentures. The ability for someone to eat with dentures depends on their ability to adapt and put pressure on the removable teeth replacement.

Some patients can chew more difficult, crunchy, hard foods with their dentures, and some patients have a harder time pushing enough forces to chew their food and have to adapt, cutting up their food or choosing softer foods.

What should I do if my dentures become loose or uncomfortable?

If your dentures become loose or uncomfortable you can try:

1) Placing a denture adhesive such as Poligrip underneath.

2) See your dentist for a permanent in-office or lab re-line which fills in any gaps or voids in the denture that could be making it loose.

3) Have your dentist check or adjust the bite of your denture.

4) A new denture might be needed.

5) There can be a soft tissue growth or tumor. It is important that your dentist examines your mouth without the denture in place.

6) Consider stabilizing the denture with dental implants.

How long do dentures last?

The amount of time someone can keep their denture depends on how well they care for it, how strong their bite is, and whether or not they break or lose it. One other thing people have to be careful of when having a denture is to make sure that their dog or pet does not get a hold of it because animals have a tendency to chew the appliance.

Even though someone has dentures, we still recommend that they have routine exams and x-rays with their dentist to ensure oral cancer screenings are normal and that there are no other issues inside their mouth.

Are there any alternatives to dentures?

Are there different options for securing dentures in place?

The most common way of securing a denture in place is by connecting it to dental implants. It can be done in two ways:

1) The patient can still remove the denture in and out of their mouth. The implants give the dentures something to grab onto.

2) The patient cannot remove the denture from their mouth but the dentist can. This allows for the best stability of the denture giving patients the greatest sense of relief, confidence, and comfort.

What types of dentures are available?

What is the process of getting dentures?

There are multiple appointments needed for capturing the shape of the mouth and making sure that the bite is accurate. It typically involves an initial impression for the lab to make a custom impression tray.

The second appointment involves using the custom tray to take a more accurate impression of the mouth and gums.

The third appointment involves using wax rim trays to determine the shape and height of the bite. This wax rim appointment allows the dentist to customize the fit and position of teeth and the way the teeth come together.

At the fourth appointment, the wax rim will have teeth that the lab has placed so that the patient can see the exact positioning of these plastic teeth, the color, and the shape. If the patient approves of that, then the lab processes it into the final acrylic.

At the fifth appointment, the patient will try the dentures and any necessary adjustments will be made.

How do I take care of my dentures?

We recommend that someone takes their dentures out when they’re sleeping at night to allow the tissues to rest and heal. When the dentures are removed, place the denture in a case or jar with a tablet to clean it, such as Efferdent.

We advise people with dentures to not use toothpaste, which can be abrasive and cause scratches in the acrylic. We also recommend avoiding alcohol or mouth rinses to avoid damaging the acrylic.

Can dentures improve my ability to eat and speak?

When someone is missing teeth and they have them replaced, dentures most of the time improve their ability to eat and speak. Unfortunately, dentures can sometimes move, making it harder to eat because they’re not attached to the mouth. The pressures of the moving lips and tongue can sometimes make it harder to chew and eat.

It takes people time to adapt to eating and speaking with dentures. If a patient is unable to get used to the dentures, the next option would be to consider dental implants where they don’t move and there is less material covering the roof of their mouth. When the acrylic of a denture covers the roof of the mouth for stability, it can impair the tongue’s mobility for speech and block taste buds.
